The Caffeinated Constituency

In what is still the tightest Primary race in recent history, everybody’s wondering what’ll eventually break the deadlock. But after 10 straight victories for Obama, including Wisconsin and Hawaii last night, there’s been more and more talk that it’ll all come down to one thing: coffee. Say what?

You see, right after the super close results of Super Tuesday, both candidates seemed to have a solid block of supporters in their corner that fell along economic lines: Clinton had consistent support from working class, uneducated voters who make under 50K a year—the “Dunkin’ Donuts Democrats”—while Obama was getting votes from the educated and more affluent Starbucks-toting “Latte Liberals”.

But with Obama’s sweep last week of the area’s “Potomac Primary”, as well as his wins last night in Hawaii and Wisconsin —which we’ll call the “Surfing Cheeseheads Primary”—the growing story at the polls is that more and more of Hillary’s Dunkin’ Dems are jumping on the ‘Bucks for ‘Bama Bandwagon.  But the true taste test will come in 2 weeks when the coffee drinkers of Ohio and Texas get to weigh in.

Ahh, the beauty of living in a consumerist society: apparently we are what we buy.  McDonald’s Vs. Burger King? Coke Vs. Pepsi?  Venti Half Caf Double Latte Vs. Good old fashioned Cream & Sugar?

It’s your choice America—stand up to the counter and be heard!
