Candidate Profile #1: Joe Biden

Hello all you political prettyfaces.

Gwen here, with your first unofficial Candidate Profile.   Now, all of the other Extreme Exchange members know that I’m the least political of our team.  I’ve spent my life fleeing from arguments and loud, spit-catapulting red-faced men, who are usually pounding the table and telling someone else how wrong they are.  Politics, in a nutshell.  My fear of arguments has sent me so far in the other direction that I did not until last week, in fact, know who most of the candidates were.  In an attempt to educate myself and the reader, I will be posting some delightful, entertaining, and informative facts about each of our FABULOUS candidates for the ’08 election.

Alphabetically, Mr. Biden comes first.  There are endless delightful facts, links, and hilarious pictures of Joe Biden under the cut.
Click it!  You know you want to.

Semi-boring Facts:

Joe Biden is a Democrat who was born in Pennsylvania.  He has been a Senator forDelaware since 1973 – currently serving his sixth term.  He previously ran for President in 1987, but his campaign floundered when he was accused of plaigarizing a speech.  Details on wikipedia (link below).

What he stands for:

The first thing I noticed was that Biden has championed women’s safety in the past, passing bills  that protect women from domestic violence and discrimination in the workplace.    He also helped create the Drug Czar and has passed various legislation controlling drugs from Ecstacy to steroids.   He’s been in the Senate for a loooong time, so he’s had his hand in quite a lot of legislative pies.

As far as I can tell, Biden is pro-bringing the troops home from Iraq, Pro-Children’s Health Care, erm… you can really find out by looking at the ISSUES section of his webpage which is listed below.  There are quite a lot of issues, and it would be redundant of me to list them here.

Personal Tragedy:

Joe Biden’s first wife and one of his daughters were killed in a car accident in 1972 – and two of his sons were injured.  Since then he remarried and commutes via train to DC for work every day from his home in Delaware.

Potentially Offensive Remarks:

While speaking to a group of Indian-Americans in Delaware, Biden stated in regards to his relationship with the Indian-American community: “I’ve had a great relationship. In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans — moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

Also, Biden especially drew criticism in the popular press for his evaluation of Senator Barack Obama; Biden was quoted in the New York Observer as saying: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy, … I mean, that’s a storybook, man.” (both these stories from Wikipedia.)

Earlier this week, a Wonkette article detailed a recent could-be-construed-as-racist comment about DC public schools? eh?

Random Factoids:

Senator Biden had a stutter as a child, and would recite poetry in front of a mirror for hours to learn to relax and speak clearly.

At 29, he was one of the youngest people ever elected to the Senate.

His middle name is Robinette?? What??

I will not be posting any videos, because the computer I’m on.. um.. ::cough:: hasn’t been updated to have flash… but you can watch them on almost all of the above sources.
